I first saw Timothy Karpinski's work in a compilation of Portland artists about four years back. His work kept popping around me in various places until about a week ago when I finally caved in and spent what little money I have on one of the zines he creates. It's really pretty, filled with doodles and full page spreads of intricate pen and paint strokes. I would highly recommend it, if you are a sketch/intricate pen drawing nerd like I am. The way that he puts together his professional pieces is really amazing and different as well. He cuts out layer upon layer of paper that he has drawn on and then stitches the pieces back together with tiny little stitches. Anyways he has a really well put together website, where you can see the countless work he has done for all sorts of really cool companies, so i will put a link to that as well as a ton of his photos.

This motorcycle has one of the first v6 engines on it. It set an unofficial land speed record of 135 miles per hour in 1926. The only protection the man driving it had was a leather jacket.

Stuff and Junk from the Aerospace museum. It was sick. In the good way. I'm going to miss this city. For the past two days I have been at a retirement home, old decrepit people surrounding me and giving me glares of contempt. My Grandmother says it's because the two women I'm meeting are related to me. I'm not sure how, and frankly I'm not having much fun. Other than visiting Monticello. That was really cool. Also the two women have amazing backstories which are a delight to listen to. One of them has literally thousands of slides of six years spent touring India as an ambassador in the late sixties. She gave me some slide she didn't want and they are gorgeous, to say the least. She has photos of temples that don't even exist anymore.

I'm not sure thinking about it now whether, I like or dislike this place. Regardless it will feel good to go home and interact with people my age.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy's Grave

Today was a humbling experience as well as a really great one. We visited Arlington National Cemetery, THE WHITE HOUSE, The Washington Memorial, The Lincoln Memorial, and The Vietnam Memorial. So you know. Pretty intense.

Today My grandmother and I went to the Museum of natural history and the National Museum of art It was a wonderful experience even though i was slightly deaf at the end from all the squealing children.

That was my biggest complaint. Why would you take your child to the east wing of the national Museum of art, that's all modern art. Do you really think they're going to get the concepts of Rothko, or Frankenthaler, or Rodin, or Duchamp? no, no I didn't think so. SO TAKE THEM SOMEWHERE ELSE OH GOOOODJDHJAHJSOFHASF IHATESCREAMINGBABIES.

anyways.... where was I ? oh yeah we went to the two museums, my mind was blown, I saw Self portrait by Van Gogh and almost cried after staring in to his eyes for what seemed like an eternity. We walked through the sculpture garden and I saw works by Louise Bourgeoise, and Lichtenstein, and then we went to the Museam of natural history. Their were giant crystals there, as well as lots of skeletons, and a caterpillar that was adorable. I named him Hungry because he was one of the types of caterpillars that eats everything, and it was a hard time giving him back. I'LL MISS YOU BUDDY! Their are also a ton of bats there, and if you know anything about me you know I love bats. Alot, alot. So here are some pictures. I'll post more tommorow.

Yesterday in between two of my classes (Oh my god you guys School is out in a week. Freak out right now) I walked to the new store called Tender Loving Empire. It is a beautiful space curated by wonderful people, and I also might get my art shown there so that's awesome. As you walk in the first thing you might spot is the back wall, which is filled to the brim with amazing artwork by many well known local names. As I was looking around I noticed a name that I was unfamiliar with. The work of Aidan Koch is at once both simplistic and complex and is a perfectly balanced to create really beautiful images that I really enjoy. I thought I had seen some pieces made by her before and when i went to her website I found out that she did all of the animations for the awesome Portland based band Nurses. Small world Right? any who's here's pics (cause I know that's all you care about) and links to her website, and etsy, and maybe her flickr, if i'm feeling rambunctious.

Eatcho is the nom de guerre of a Portland artist who makes very silly, very awesome pictures. He works primarily in marker and colored pencil, but has been known to dabble in watercolor. They seem to lie right on the precipice of cartoon and adult works, and I think that's what intrigues, and pulls me to it the most. I also really like his use of detailed line work and many of the pieces he creates make me laugh, in a naughty way.

Aaron Smith is a painter from California who is doing the Fauvist style of paintings in a whole new way. Their seriously some of the coolest paintings I've seen in a long time. The bulk of his work is bold color based painting in blotches and bursts that are almost kaleidoscopic in scope. I am almost reminded of Mattises early work when I look at them.

Arien Valizadeh

Arien Valizadeh is a painter/collage artist/cartoonist/photographer based out of Los Angeles California who does some pretty neat things focused on terrorism and our preconceived notions of the people behind them. At once shocking, hilarious, and poignant, the latest series he (?) created are a group of blown up (haha get it?) panels from different Persian comics that he has collaged together then re-painted, so they become one, large scale piece of art. I find them to be really eye catching, especially done in just black and white. Below are some of his pictures, as well as a link to his website. I really like them for reasons that I am not entirely sure of right now. I know that the craftsmanship is amazing, and i really love the use of color and textures, and their are some really funny ones in there as well. If you have been reading the blog at all (ha ha... yeah right. Yeah right) you know that I really enjoy artists that create fantastical landscapes and characters. This is why I am in love with the duo of Apak. Coming out of Portland Aaron Piland and Ayumi Kajikawa, are the amazing magical duo behind team Apak. Their characters are adorable and mysterious. Their worlds are filled with lush landscapes, geometric houses and crystalline objects jutting out from various places. There is also the fact that all of their paintings are tiny. Like redonkulously tiny. I have a huge amount of respect for that. They just make me happy.

I especially like that in the first one he's reading to little tiny hedgehogs.

He's a Portland based art machine, who also helps run the incredibly fun, incredibly non pretentious art gallery/ store, Pony club, with the help of a clutch of other very talented artists. I have been a fan of his work since grade seven and continue to love everything about it. The colors, the texture the insane amount of detail. It's all pretty mind blowing to me. Music Break: Theopilus London

Sometimes I listen to music, and right now I'm really enjoying this video by the rapper(?) Theopilus London. It's for his song Humdrum town which sort of fuses rap, pop music, and dance floor beats, to create an awesomely awesome song, that I've kind of been listening to on repeat for a day or... twelve. It's also got really good art direction, with an old school, vhs vibe running through the entire thing

So I was browsing Booooooom.com the other day (oh my god have you guys been to the boooooooom website? Oh my god it's like, the best) and i came across the work of Seattle based Stacey Rozich. It's pretty stunning, and definitely eye candy, but her actual thought proccess behind the work is even cooler. See, I did me some research, and came across a mini interview she did with another art based website Fecalface.com. She has created her own personal narrative behind each piece she creates and then left it up to the viewer to figure out what that story is. In doing so she makes each piece personal to the viewer. For instance, when i look at the pictures i think of shamans and overlords and native american deities. Betsy Walton

Betsy Walton is a Kansas born, now Portland based artist who makes some pretty incredible paintings. A mix of heavily saturated colors, angular geometric lines and shapes, and natural landscapes and characters, they are sort of abstracted delineated portraits of surreal places and designs. She paints with gouache, which has always been an extremely difficult medium for me, so these paintings are doubly impressive when i think of all the work that must be put in to them. She has designed for Poketo, done covers for The Portland Mercury, Collaborated with Irana Douer, and made a crap ton of awesome art. Here are some pictures of her work, and a link to her website. Jon Macnair is a seriously gifted artist with pen and paper. He's based in Seattle ( I think/hope/don't really know) and I love, love, love his work. Based around mystical, animalistic characters and oversized fantastical flowers, landscapes, and buildings, he manages to make his artwork seem ancient and contemporary at the same time. His work has been featured in the Baltimore magazine, on the cover of The Stranger, and other various independent publishers. Luke Ramsey makes incredibly detailed perfectly colored pieces of art that are a sight to behold. his line work is absolutely perfect, and switches between thick almost childish lines, to tiny near invisible detail lines. Dear seven followers. Have you ever realized that maybe people that are older than you, or people that are younger than you aren't that really different than the people you hang out with normally after all ? I spent tonight around my 85 year old grandfather and his 70+ year old friends and i can in all honesty say, that i haven't laughed that hard in a long time. To be more precise, I haven't met someone of that age who i could actually identify with other than those directly related to me. It was really refreshing to know that hopefully when I'm that age I can look at the 18 year olds around me and make a joke about testicles and know that they'll laugh about it.

The mother is counting how many ciggarettes she has, and I am getting proggresively more nervous that bobby is going to eat the babies fingers that are waving in his face. OH! So guess what ? Yesterday was annual blowing things up day! otherwise known as the fourth of July. So we went to my uncles Fiances sons house and ate a butt load of food and set of lots, and lots of illegal fireworks. Like the kind you have to put a tarp over when you drive because you can be pulled over for them. The kind that are so loud they make your chest shake, and your eyeballs melt.

So the end of the school year is coming, and that means that there is no more high school for me. To be completely honest, it's really weird to think about. I've been in this place for two years and before that i was at a different school for two years. I've had over twenty people teach me different things, most of which i will in all likelyhood, never remember. Some of the teachers were bad. Some were good (Shout out to MARLO!) but most of the time i used high school as a social network. I have alot of friends (or at I like to think so) but i don't see alot of them outside of school. So with two days left I've been trying to say hi to all of them and talk to as many people as possible. I don't think that I'll be able to see them all though, and I'm not sure if I'm really O'K with this. Highschools been many things to me, but it sure has never been boring.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that school has been alot of emotions, and work, and sitting through assemblies that were terrible, but in the end I am really going to miss it...... EXCEPT NOT! I can't wait to get out of here. May fools day!
And I got all of my friends phone numbers so it's gonna be one fun summer!
Except the whole work thing. Oh well.

yeah so i haven't posted in a whole eighteen days and apparently that is way too many days, for all five followers. So here's the deal. I've been sort of busy, is the excuse I'm gonna go with on this one. Here's what I've been doing.

The style I'm getting is alot more sketchy than my usual drawings, but it's kind of interesting to look at. Using it is nothing like using actual pen and paper, but it's not that different from painting, in that it's difficult and really annoyinh if you mess up.
Over all I give them a five out of ten.
Near my school we also have eagles nesting and it's really cool to see them flying around.

I took a trip to Philadelphia for an entire week but who's talking?
If you don't know, I'm an Irish dancer and I spent the week at the world championships in Philadelphia, freaking out, and then dancing. If you're not aware (a staggering number of people are ) Irish dance is actually a huge sport. It's also amazing, and tiring, and stressful, and facetious, and all around one of the most mentally, and physicaly exhausting things you can choose to committ yourself too.
I love it more than I could possibly describe in words.
After eleven years of doing it though, I had decided that for some reason, this was going to be my last competition. I think it was because, after dealing with all of the emotional baggage that comes with dance i was just tired. I was done with doing it for the judges, or for my teacher or for my parents. While I tried to convince myself that really in the end I was doing it for myself, I really was doing it for them. What had started out in the beginning as something that made me so happy i couldn't stop moving my feet, had turned into something I didn't want it to be.
It stopped being fun.
So I set a personal goal of just dancing the best I could at Worlds and really not caring what the others said, and I worked.
I worked, and worked, and worked.
And when i got to the competition i really felt like I was ready to get up on that stage and just show everyone how much I had improved. It suddenly became about me again. Not anyone else. Then it suddenly became fun again, and i can't tell you how amazing it was to walk on to that stage and see all of my friends and my mom up on the balcony, rooting for me.I finally figured out why I danced for them.Because it made me fell so happy to have people who no matter what you do in life, they support you. As long as you put one hundred percent in to it they'll be on your side. I felt like I could do anything. I didn't care about the judges. I was not afraid of the other people I was dancing with, I was just happy that i was dancing.
In the end I didn't do very well. But it didn't matter to me because I had accomplished my goal. I'm not sure if I'm going to continue doing majors, or if I'm even going to continue really doing competitions at all, but what I do know is that I got what i wanted back.
I got back my happy feet.

Some fancy pants politician just recently said, that instead of something being done to the famous Made in Oregon light up sign with a deer on it, or instead of just keeping it the way it is, we should just take it down. She said that her reasoning behind this, was the fact that the deer is of course a symbol of christmas and so it might offend people of different religions.
Last time i checked deers don't have a whole lot to do with the birth of Christ.
Personally it seems like changing the sign so that it says anything other than what it has said for such a long time, is just silly. Like taking Powells bookstore, and changing it to the Portland state bookstore. It's a landmark and changing it jsut confuses people, and makes the ones who actually knew what it was before it changed, just not want to live here for fear of having all the famous landmarks changed.
That's my opinion though.

So apparently there was a magnitude four point four earthquake in San Francisco today. Which means that the mega push is most likely coming. So everybody brace yourself, because you'll probably be dead in a couple days.

Anyways, if you don't know what the mega push is than you should Google it. It will most likely make you want to hide under your table. But that won't help!

I've been a fan of Fontanelle Gallery on Pine street (kiddie corner to Stump town) Since a couple of months ago when i happened to stumble upon it. The people there are quite possibly the nicest people you can meet, and there is a continual stream of amazing artwork flowing through there doors most every day. They have this amazing thing in the back of the shop called the parlour, where they sell hand crafted items as well as art, for ridiculously cheap prices. One of my favorite favorite pieces is by the group Wonder Thunder based in Seattle Washington.

It's called the angry toast and it's a pillow.
I love it. So if you get the chance be sure to check out the gallery. Their next show is curated by the always amazing Ryan Jacob Smith.

Have you seen the new Where The Wild Things Are poster? Pretty much amazing. I'm not sure how the movie is going to turn out, but it seems at first glance to be really beautiful cinematography. Granted I'm just going off of screen shots.

The artist Eiko Ishizawa, based out of Amsterdam designed and created the Bear Bag. A sleeping bag that covers your head and makes you look like a bear! It's hard to describe in words so here are pictures.

I want one so bad! Although it would be a little creepy to act like you were sleeping inside a bear. Oh well. I still want it.

Anyone else really dislike the O.L.C.C ? I sure do. Mainly for the fact that they did this.

Christie Scott, the public affairs specialist for the OLCC, said that the new amendment would be completely voluntary for venue-owners.
“It would merely give them the option - not to mention the guidelines - for mixed-age events,”

So here's my problem with this. Why would you make this voluntary? By making it so that the clubs have to get them you make it so, they don't HAVE to have all ages show, they just can if they want to.
It just seems silly to me, that owners are willing to pay for a liquor license but not make it so that some of their shows were all ages. Plus the fact that these laws have to do with music venues and not bars. In the end i don't think one or two all ages shows are going to really, really damage how much money you make. There's a massive amount of kids under the age of 21 who are willing and ready to pay to see their favorite bands, and you think that it's a good idea to shut them all out because you can make more money from Alcohol?
I'm not an expert but i just think that we the city of portland could use some more all ages shows, instead of having to crowd into a tiny house.
short version is that we should have alot more all ages venues.

So Me and my friends have decided to go on a tour/roving artists/camping trip this summer for a week and a half. SURPRISE MOM!
Anyways we're just going to go up and down the coast of Oregon and California and Washington. So far it's going to be seven people and they're all going to be part of either the band or setting up, or merch. table or something important.
It's probs going to be tots radical.

yesterday my mom went to pick up shirts for our our dance companies young ones, and miscellaneous other people. We left ridiculously early for class, and we picked up everything we need and then we went to class. We got there and one of the little ones parents asked for a t-shirt so my mom opened up the box that they had placed them in.... and there were sweaters. Sweater, upon sweater, upon sweater filled the box. It was like opening a box that you thought was filled with flowers, and finding out it was filled with bees. With lasers attached to them.
Needless to say my mother actually almost killed somebody.
The moral of the story, is don't mess with mothers, who have to take care of fifteen screaming children who all need shirts.
Or better yet just don't mess with my mother.
Because you will die.

The Hush, quite possibly one of the coolest all ages venues in Portland was shut down this weekend due to their stunning lack of permits, for more or less anything. Fom what i was told, five police officers, two fire marshalls and a representative from the olcc showed up and told everyone, that even though they were having fun, they all need to leave, because did you know we're the fun nazis? It was kind of inevitiable, seeing as the place was kind of shifty, but it's still really depressing when such a good venue, that once again was ALL AGES gets shut down due to people feeling like they need to asert their authourity over teenagers, by telling them they need permits.
I'm just saying....
It's just sad, and lame. I hope that they find a new place to party it up, because the one thing this city needs is more all ages places, that don't blow chunks.

I find it really funny that the D.E.A stands for drug enforcement agency. So are they enforcing drugs? Is that it? Because Ithought that, that was what they were supposed to be doing the opposite of.
